In efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality, the effective utilization of waste wood and thinning materials has become increasingly important in the field of wood utilization. Wood-based boards manufactured by fiberizing or chipping such waste and thinning materials and molding them with adhesives are widely used as construction materials for housing and furniture. However, formaldehyde, a functional component contained in commonly used adhesives, is derived from fossil fuel resources (natural gas), raising concerns about future resource depletion. As sustainability becomes a key priority, the development of alternatives to formaldehyde has therefore become an urgent challenge.
In this study, we are working to establish technologies for producing truly sustainable wood-based boards by replacing conventional adhesives with naturally derived components. Formaldehyde is used not only in adhesives but also across a wide range of industries, and the outcomes of this research are expected to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in multiple sectors.
