Closed‑recirculating land‑based aquaculture systems equipped with ozone‑based water purification can process multiple purification steps in an integrated manner. However, when rearing water becomes heavily contaminated, denitrification of harmful ammonia can be inhibited, posing a critical operational challenge.
In this study, we utilize sea urchins removed as part of barren‑ground (isoyake) mitigation efforts and pursue two parallel developments:
the creation of an optimal water purification system for sea urchin holding and conditioning, and
the development of a specialized feed that both improves sea urchin quality and prevents water contamination from feces.
By integrating these technologies, we aim to establish a viable business model for the sustainable utilization of barren‑area sea urchins through closed‑loop land‑based aquaculture.
