Project Title: Development of Core Equipment to Support the Establishment of a Consulting Business for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Methods Toward Zero-Emission Agriculture

Principal Investigator: Shigeto Sudo, Group Leader, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO)

  • Background

農業により排出されるCO₂の削減を目指す

Agriculture is often perceived as environmentally friendly; however, the reality is that it is not yet zero-emission and continues to generate significant amounts of greenhouse gases. In October 2020, the Japanese government declared its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, aiming to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions to net zero.
Through our initiatives, we seek to realize zero-emission agriculture by developing technologies that simultaneously enhance agricultural productivity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and by promoting the widespread adoption of the resulting farming models.

  • Overview of the Project

Establishing methods for zero-emission agriculture through technological development and collaboration with local communities and companies

Building on technologies such as agriculture as a carbon sequestration industry through biochar, and methane emission reduction in paddy fields through practices such as mid-season drainage and soil improvement, we aim to establish a forum in collaboration with global companies committed to carbon neutrality, as well as local governments. Through these efforts, we seek to promote carbon-neutral agriculture in alignment with the TNFD framework.
Based on the core concepts of measuring (assessment), producing (farming), and selling (value creation), we will explore pathways to translate these initiatives into viable business models and establish practical methods for zero-emission agriculture.

  • Future Outlook

Aiming to establish new ventures and expand business operations through collaboration with relevant organizations and compani

We will work in collaboration with industry, government, and academia to establish initiatives such as a corporate collaboration forum and regional projects aimed at achieving carbon neutrality through demonstration projects. By establishing methods that can be deployed on a global scale, we aim to pursue new venture creation and business expansion.

  • About the Program

Hands-on support provided by ILP professionals accelerates efforts toward commercialization

We had long held a vision of creating a framework for inter-company collaboration to drive the development and dissemination of zero-emission agriculture technologies, and believed that it would be necessary to establish a core company to serve as the nucleus of this effort. When we learned of the call for applications for this Program, we applied through our affiliated organization.
Under this Program, we received hands-on support from candidates for executive leadership roles (ILP professionals) who are currently working at the forefront of their respective industries. They provided advice on business model development and conducted research on similar business models within Japan. The insights offered from the perspective of young business professionals proved to be a significant driving force in advancing our efforts toward commercialization.
